Band History Overview
The Go-Go’s formed in Los Angeles in 1978, emerging from the city’s punk and new-wave club scene. Their classic lineup—Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, and Kathy Valentine—became the first all-female band to write, perform, and play on a #1 Billboard album with “Beauty and the Beat” in 1981.
Throughout their career, the band experienced lineup shifts, personal conflicts, reunions, hiatus periods, and tours with temporary members. Despite breakups and long gaps, the core lineup repeatedly reunited, recording new material, touring extensively, and sustaining their influence as one of the most important female rock groups of all time.
Their story spans early punk roots, mainstream pop-rock success, multiple reunions, a Broadway musical (Head Over Heels), a 2020 documentary, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2021, and ongoing legacy performances through 2025.
